Science
Intent
At Thornhill Primary School, we want our children to be naturally curious about the world around them and to develop a deeper understanding of how science shapes and changes the world in which we live. We strive to nurture a sense of wonder about natural phenomena whilst developing children into confident, enquiry-based learners with a lifelong love of science. Through our science curriculum, supported by the Developing Experts programme, children are encouraged to ask questions, think critically and explore scientific concepts through investigation and discovery. We aim to develop scientifically literate pupils who understand key scientific knowledge and vocabulary and can apply this understanding to explain the world around them. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that substantive and disciplinary knowledge is built progressively throughout a child's time at Thornhill. Key concepts, such as the human body, are revisited and developed across year groups, enabling children to build upon prior learning and embed knowledge into their long-term memory. We are committed to ensuring that all children see themselves as scientists. By introducing children to a diverse range of scientists and scientific achievements, we inspire pupils to recognise their own potential as future innovators, problem-solvers and changemakers. By the time children leave Thornhill Primary School, we intend for them to have the confidence, resilience and scientific understanding needed to independently question, investigate and make sense of the world around them.
Implementation
Progression of both substantive and disciplinary knowledge is carefully planned across the school to ensure children develop a secure understanding of scientific concepts and enquiry skills over time. New vocabulary and key concepts are explicitly taught through direct instruction, modelling and purposeful discussion, enabling children to use scientific language accurately and confidently. Learning opportunities are designed to develop children's ability to work collaboratively whilst applying their reading, writing and speaking skills across the curriculum. Practical investigations and enquiry-based activities allow children to select and use scientific equipment, gather and interpret data, draw evidence-based conclusions and communicate their findings effectively. Assessment is ongoing throughout each unit. At the end of every topic, children complete a Unit Review, providing opportunities to demonstrate and celebrate their learning through a variety of formats, including concept maps, fact files, infographics, presentations and quizzes. These reviews enable teachers to identify the knowledge and understanding that pupils have secured and any areas requiring further support.
Through a rich and engaging curriculum, children continually develop their scientific knowledge, enquiry skills and confidence, preparing them to become independent learners who can question, investigate and understand the world around them.
